The Top TV & Film Influencing Men’s Style
Unlike womenswear, menswear and men’s hair trends are heavily influenced by television shows and films. I’m going to look into some of the TV and film that I feel have influenced my own style, or that have influenced the haircuts I give to my clients when cutting hair.
Personally, I feel the TV show Mad Men was one of the most stylish programmes ever made. The character Don Draper, played by John Hamm, was the epitome of 1960s sartorial fashion. Although the programme was set in the 1960s, the costumes used in this show transcend every decade of style and are costumes I would consider timeless. This is something which has gave the programme longevity and will surely still be being enjoyed in years to come. The men’s haircuts across this show are also fine examples of timelessness, any snap-shot of a haircut taken from Mad Men would not look out of place across any decade.
Peaky Blinders is obviously a TV programme that has heavily influenced the work I do on a daily basis. The ‘Thomas Shelby’ haircut is one that is asked for time and time again. Although Peaky Blinders has affected the work I do recently, the film Lawless starring Shia Labeouf and Tom Hardy was when I noticed the 1920/1930s haircuts really take off. After the film was released in 2012 we noticed a lot of these styles being asked for regularly in the barbershops, often accompanied with a picture taken straight from the film itself. The haircut on the character played by Shia Labeouf was one of the most commonly requested haircuts and is still being asked for in barbershops now, 6 years after the film was released.
More recently the hugely popular Stranger Things has influenced a huge shift in men’s fashion. We’ve seen Nike Cortez trainers come straight back to the forefront, stonewashed straight legged jeans and wider leg trousers, reminiscent of the 1980s, have returned to menswear. Calvin Klein have also showcased a lot of big shouldered trench coats and blazers on their latest collection all heavily influenced by the 1980s trend started by Stranger Things. Even more recently Burberry have showcased a strong 1980s shape in the mens haircuts from their latest collection, introducing extra length through the back of the head.
Another film that caused a huge stir in the fashion community was Dazed and Confused. The mini revival of 1970s fashion in the 1990s could be argued to have been a result of the release of this film. We saw a huge increase in flared jeans being worn and a large number of men growing their hair into more shaggy hairstyles reminiscent of the 1970s.
These are just a few examples of how television and films have influenced fashion trends and men’s haircuts in recent years. I have no doubt that much more fictional entertainment will shift style in years to come, so be sure to keep an eye out on stylish films and remember you can take your style inspiration from anywhere.
